On Jan. 11, the University of North Alabama commemorated 196 years of service to Alabama, leading the way as the state’s first publicly chartered four-year higher education institution. As part of the events on Founders’ Day, officials at UNA launched UNA’s multi-year celebration leading up to UNA’s official bicentennial date of January 2030.
The University of North Alabama Police Department is the proud owner of two electronic bikes, or e-bikes, thanks to the generosity of several donors. The Spinning Spoke in downtown Florence and the Parke Cochran Insurance Agency provided the majority of the funding, along with a few anonymous donors, to make the e-bikes possible.
More than a dozen University of North Alabama graduates were honored as part of the recent commencement ceremonies. Eleven students received a Keller Key for achieving the highest grade point average in the graduating class, while two students were awarded with the Turris Fidelis, an honor based on their outstanding service to the University as well as superior academic achievement.
Sky watchers will be in for a treat as the Geminid meteors will peak this week, on the night of Dec. 13-14. This year’s Geminids will peak during a waning crescent Moon, so the Moon will not be a large factor in diminishing the number of meteors that may be viewed in the night sky.
