Overview:  In Chapter 2, you will begin a voyage of discovery in Russia,  the heart of the former Soviet Union which collapsed in 1991. This is the largest territorial country in the world and is twice as large as the next one, Canada.  It is located in the higher latitudes and its climate is affected by nearness to polar regions. Russia was one of the world's major colonial powers and gained territory throughout its history along its southern and western edges and even established a very early presence on our west coast.  This chapter traces Russia's historical and cultural evolution while providing information on its physical landscapes, economic development and ethnicity.

You will accomplish several objectives after your study of the Russian geographic realm.

Assignments:

  • Review Russia's major geographic qualities.
  • Familiarize yourself with Russian physical and human geography by knowing the location of the following:  
  • Eight physiographic regions (see map p. 113)
  • Rivers:  Don, Dnieper, Volga, Ob, Irtysh, Amur, Ussuri
  • Water Bodies:  Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Lake Baykal, Bering Sea Barents Sea, White Sea, Baltic Sea
  • Land Bodies:  Kola Peninsula, Kamchatka Peninsulva, Sakhalin, Moscow Basin, West Siberian Plain, Yakutsk Basin
  • Mountain Ranges:  Ural Mountains, Caucasus Mountains, Central Asian Ranges
  • Cities:  Moscow, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Yakutsk, Vladivostok, Magadan, Baki (Baku)
