FIRST
MAP QUIZ - THE WORLD This is a big week
for us if only because you are taking your first map quiz using
Pipeline. Many of you have already logged on, however if you haven't
please do so. Your ID is your first initial, middle initial and
last name. Your password is your six-digit birth date. Logon
to Pipeline as soon as possible. Contact cpsupport@una.edu
if you need any assistance. The test will be available through Pipeline between September 9th at noon and September 11th at midnight. Login to Pipeline and navigate to the the "My Courses" page using the tabs at the top of the window. Select "World Regional Geography". When you have access to a test you will see the "exam icon". Click on the exam icon and you will get to choose the quiz or exam you wish to take. Overview: During this week you will explore the exciting world of maps. It is said that maps are the language of geography and they can portray the numerous physical and human features on Earth in a variety of ways. A map is a graphic
representation of Earth or parts of it which are drawn to a particular
scale. While maps distort certain properties, a spherical globe is
a model which represents Earth more or less in its true shape and form
at a greatly reduced scale. Assignments:
After you have explored the atlas, work a few Lat/Long problems for review and then complete the Atlas Exercise. These exercise will provide you with an idea of how exam questions could be written. Ideas and terms: (Get acquainted with these.) map, globe, Atlas, real map, virtual map, image map, reference map, thematic map, aerial photography, location, absolute location, relative location, lat/long, scale, small scale, large scale, representative fraction, township and range-photo p. 6, time zone
Resources: These resources provide you with additional information about maps and mapping. The NASA image site is full of Earth images from space. Spend some time exploring these areas.
