Overview:

During the past few years, you have become acutely aware of the Middle Eastern world as a result of terrorist actions on the World Trade Centers, in Bali, the Iraq, Afghanistan  and other places. Perhaps  this might have been one of the first times you have heard much if anything at all about the country of Afghanistan or Iraq. Indeed, many Americans are in the same situation and are now struggling to understand the "Middle Eastern" world.

The regional term "Middle East" is used quite freely to describe an area that stretches from Morocco in Northwest Africa through the "stans" just south of Russia. Your authors use the term North Africa/Southwest Asia to define the region with the term "Middle East" relegated to a sub-region. However, it is named, the region has certain perceived and real characteristics such as Islam, Arab, terrorism, oil, and dryness among others. It is your task to study the defining characteristics while recognizing variations among regions and countries.
